The
Band-width
Project

Overall Purpose: To clearly present musical concepts of rhythm, harmony, and melody (timbre) in the context of band-type collaboration. Tools include acoustic instruments but will revolve around networked digital instruments displayed in a graphical, song-oriented environment. This project is part of a series of programs in development that stress musical creativity and idea sharing.

Instructional Objective: The main goal of these activities is to integrate existing musical, intellectual, and collaborative passions into projects that emphasize not only the music, but the social, cultural, and scientific underpinnings of what makes music important and satisfying.

The learners and participants should emerge from the activities with a new appreciation of their own musical aesthetics and at least an awareness of different musical styles and tastes. A focus on systems of distributed collaboration should encourage students to gravitate into formal bands or teams outside their communities. An emphasis on Universal Design will ensure that the sounds and work are accessible to all learners on the Web.

Interact with learners using music, and games for song. Opportunities exist in alternative educational settings to build lessons out of the passions of the learners. Compelling visualizations provide a context for children to learn about digital music and sound science in general, and there many sound and music applications available for free to learn with.
